Invisalign Q & A

Savannah Dental Group

What is Invisalign?

Invisalign is a cutting-edge treatment that straightens teeth to deliver enhanced smiles. With Invisalign, you wear transparent, custom-made removable aligners made of flexible, FDA-approved thermoplastic that gradually shift your teeth into proper alignment.

How does Invisalign work?

Before you begin treatment, Dr. Patti uses digital scans to show you the details of your treatment plan, including the precise, planned movements of your teeth. Next, he takes impressions of your teeth that the lab uses to produce your custom-made aligners.

Once your aligners arrive, you need to wear them for at least 20-22 hours a day. They’re removable, so you can take them out while you brush your teeth and eat.

Over time, the aligners apply controlled force to your teeth, progressively shifting your teeth over time. Every few weeks, you receive a new set of aligners that is slightly different from the old ones to continue moving your teeth.

Throughout treatment, you maintain regular appointments with Dr. Patti, so he can monitor your progress and make adjustments to your treatment plan. On average, Invisalign takes one year to straighten your teeth, but individual results may vary.

Why should I choose Invisalign over traditional braces?

With Invisalign, you can smile with confidence because no one can tell you’re wearing a dental appliance. Unlike traditional braces, Invisalign is removable and virtually invisible. Because you remove your aligners, you can eat without worrying about food getting stuck in your braces.

Your regular checkups during Invisalign treatment are very simple. At most, Dr. Patti makes slight adjustments to your aligners or offers advice on how to take better care of them. There’s no painful pulling on, tugging on, or tightening of metal brackets like your experience with traditional braces.

How do I take care of my aligners?

Taking care of your aligners is a key part of Invisalign treatment. Make sure to brush your aligners with toothpaste and rinse them in warm water. Don’t use water that’s too hot because it may bend the plastic material. Another option for cleaning is using the Invisalign cleaning system.
